81 slides with sound. Kodak carousel slide projector with timer, amplifier and loudspeakers

Variable dimensions

To the amplified sound of a slide projector, this work displays various models and types of machetes sourced throughout the Americas in different epochs, now held in the collection of Fideicomiso de Conservación in Puerto Rico. Eighty-one images narrate the journey of a loaded object that has assumed different sociopolitical and symbolic meanings over a long time period. The artist has described the machete as “an offensive object in the least and most offensive ways.” The title explores the double edge of the machete, which was central to both the colonial experience and the anticolonial struggle.
